FAQ
What sort of questions do you answer?
We answer questions related to sex, sexuality, gender, and relationships. We can talk about sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and fertility, different ways to have relationships, different ways to have sex, and nearly anything related to sex. If we can’t answer your question, we will do our best to provide resources and referrals for places or people who can.
Can I ask questions about my partner?
Sure, you can ask any question you have. We can answer questions specific to you, and potentially offer general information about the situation. You can also call with your partner, or encourage them call us directly.
Can I ask about something that might not be legal?
We welcome all questions. At SGR, we aim to provide fact based, non-judgmental information about anything that comes up about sex, gender, and relationships. We emphasize consent and recognize that some activities may be judged by families or local communities, and will provide resources and referrals for local regulations when possible.
Can I ask a graphic or explicit question?
Yes! We encourage all questions about sex, no matter how direct they might be. We do not engage in conversations about explicit content for the purpose of masturbating or exploring sexual fantasies, but if you have a question about a position, technique, kink, or other sexual subject, we will answer it!
Can I ask questions about my body?
Yes, we can answer a variety of questions about bodies and anatomy, including questions about puberty, physical responses, differences in ability, navigating physical limitations, preparing to engage in new sexual activities, and more. We are not trained doctors, and will let you know when it might be time to ask a health care provider about your question.
Do I have (insert STD here)?
We have comprehensive training around a range of sexually transmitted infections, and we acknowledge that information changes rapidly. We can talk through your symptoms, timeline, and activities that you may have questions about. We cannot provide a specific diagnosis over the hotline but we CAN offer resources, referrals, and general recommendations about whether to seek treatment when possible.
Am I pregnant?
It is normal to have a lot of questions about pregnancy and whether pregnancy could have occurred from the activities you engaged in or are considering. We can talk to you about what activities have a potential of resulting in a pregnancy, and about timelines of what happened and how they might be related to fertility cycles. We can’t give you a definitive answer on whether you are pregnant but we can talk to you about likelihood and offer recommendations for pregnancy tests and follow-up with a health care provider.
Am I gay?
Many people have questions about sexual orientation. We can talk to you about your questions, and refer you to other hotlines if you would like to chat about sexual orientation or feeling like you are or might be gay.
I am a minor, can I ask a question?
Yes! We welcome questions from people of all ages, and will answer questions based on your unique situation and experience.
I am a parent, can I ask about my child?
Yes, we encourage parents to contact us to talk about how to talk to your children about sex and gender, or to talk about a situation or experience your child might be having. You can also encourage your children to contact us, or help them give us a call!
Do you offer phone sex?
No, we are not a phone sex line. We are happy to answer questions about sex, gender, and relationships. These questions might directly be about sex, however we don’t talk about sex for the purpose of sexual or personal gratification. We can refer you to places that offer that service if you are interested in that.
How can I volunteer with you?
If you’re a sex educator, please complete our volunteer questionnaire and we will review it and reach out.
If I have not completed any training as a sex educator, can I still volunteer? At SGR, we require some type of sex education experience to start volunteering on our hotline. You do not need to have completed a formal program or certification, and can develop your skills in a variety of ways. If you are still working on completing your training, there are other ways you can connect with us! Complete our questionnaire and we will talk to you about ways you might be able to connect with us.
Can I volunteer on your hotline from anywhere?
Currently, we operate our hotline in San Francisco and you must be able to attend in person in order to volunteer on the hotline.
